DRC Rights and Responsibilities
For Students
The student has the right to:
- Be free from discrimination on the grounds of having a disability and free from retaliatory discrimination
- Neither be excluded from nor denied access to any program, service or activity for which the student is otherwise qualified
- Be evaluated based on ability, not disability; if a particular evaluation method results in a lower performance score for the student due to a disability, the student is entitled to be evaluated by alternate means
- Reasonable adjustments in those aspects of any college program where the student's disability limits access, participation, or ability to benefit
- Provided with access to auxiliary aids and assistive technology determined necessary to provide equal access and opportunity
- Not be counseled toward more restrictive career objectives based upon their disability
- Be provided assistance from the Disability Resource Center in removing any physical, academic and attitudinal barriers that limit equal opportunity and access
- Be informed of their grievance rights and grievance procedures, including the appeal of decisions concerning academic accommodations, via either informal or formal processes
- Be assured that information about a disability is held in strict confidence, shared only on a need-to-know basis in the student’s academic interest and performance
The student has a responsibility to:
- Identify him/herself in a timely manner to Disability Resource Center as a student with a disability requesting academic accommodations
- Provide acceptable documentation of their impairment and related limitations to the Disability Resource Center n keeping with the established documentation standards
- Actively participate in the determination and development of appropriate and effective accommodations
- Request accommodations from instructors for specific classes and assume appropriate responsibility for implementation of accommodations
- Meet the same academic and student conduct standards as other students, and to ask for assistance and accommodations in an appropriate manner
- To provide for personal independent living needs or other personal disability-related needs
For Faculty
The faculty member has the right to:
- Establish the standards of abilities, skills, and knowledge necessary for success in particular programs, and to evaluate students based on mastery of these abilities, skills, and knowledge
- Assert which requests for accommodation would fundamentally alter the nature of the program and use a deliberative process within the academic department to establish that fundamental alteration
- Refuse requests for accommodation that have not been processed through the Disability Resource Center
- Select among equally effective methods of accommodating a student with a disability
- Obtain appropriate consultation about how to meet the needs of a student with a disability
The faculty member has the responsibility to:
- Provide a teaching environment characterized by non-discrimination
- Ensure all instructional programs, materials and methods are accessible providing an equally effective and equally integrated educational experience for students with disabilities
- Be aware of the laws related to teaching students with disabilities
- Inform students of the availability of accommodations, and refer students to the Disability Resource Center when appropriate
- Discuss needs individually and on a timely basis with students requesting accommodation
- Provide reasonable accommodations in a timely manner to students who have been approved for services by the Disability Resource Center
- Evaluate students based solely on ability, not disability. If an evaluation method or criteria has an adverse impact on a student's performance due to a disability, the faculty member should seek alternative means for evaluation
