The use of a numeric calculator may be considered a reasonable accommodation for students registered in the Disability Resource Center (DRC) in very specific situations. These circumstances will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The DRC and the Math Department at Truckee Meadows Community College have collaborated to establish the following policy regarding numeric calculator use on the ACCUPLACER placement test and during math exams.
ACCUPLACER
To facilitate student placement in the math courses, TMCC uses the computerized ACCUPLACER Placement Test. This placement assessment is untimed and not graded. To ensure that all students are placed in the appropriate math class, use of any type of calculator will not be allowed on the ACCUPLACER.
Math Exams
The DRC will approve the use of a numeric calculator on a math exam as a reasonable accommodation if the following criteria are met:
- The student with a disability has registered with the DRC and has furnished adequate documentation indicating specific learning disabilities or psychological conditions affecting arithmetic computation and/or arithmetic comprehension.
- The test does not assess mathematical computation skills outcomes with the use of a numeric calculator as determined by the instructor and/or the math department.
- Computation skills outcomes may be assessed by alternate methods including, but not limited to, written and/or verbal assessment. The type of alternate assessment will be determined by the instructor using rubrics of the individual instructor's design.
