Accessible Instructional Material Procedures

TMCC Student in Library

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) has been requested to clarify for the TMCC community the regulations in place regarding accessibility and electronic eligibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 provisions.

As a public institution, TMCC has an obligation to ensure that its services, programs, and informational materials may be accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities.

The purpose of the Guidelines on Accessibility and the Electronic Environment is to sustain and improve accessibility to the educational process to the widest possible audience.

  • Instructors and departments responsible for course content at TMCC must provide reasonable accommodation or modification for students with disabilities.
  • The DRC staff determines whether a student has a disability as defined by the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act.
  • If the student has a disability and needs accommodations which meet the limitations of the disability, the DRC staff, in consultation with the student and faculty, suggests accommodations.
  • If the DRC staff, faculty and student are unable to agree on accommodations, the DRC Director shall select the accommodation to be provided.

Due to the use of emerging new technology, it is important to make certain that the technology to be used is accessible to students with disabilities.

If the technology is not accessible to students with disabilities, the department and instructor are responsible for making certain that students with disabilities can acquire the same information, interactions, and services as other students in the class with equivalent ease of use.

Technologies can include software provided with textbooks, internet sites and videos. Technologies used at TMCC will be reviewed by a committee on a regular basis for accessibility. The committee will consist of a variety of administrators, faculty, and classified staff. They will also review this guideline in light of emerging technologies and when necessary, make recommendations to update the guidelines.

Please contact TMCC's Disability Resource Center regarding any concerns or questions referencing these guidelines. It is important that equal access is provided in the classroom to the widest possible audience.
