Comment Solicitation on Dental Assisting Program Accreditation Review

Notice to Potential Dental Assisting Applicants
Enrolled students are exposed to a variety of pathogens including bloodborne pathogens . These include but are not limited to pathogenic organisms found in blood that can cause illness such as Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and those pathogens found in oral/respiratory secretions that can cause illness such as Tuberculosis and Herpes.
The dental assisting program at Truckee Meadows Community College is a ten month program and offers both a Certificate of Achievement and Associate degree in Applied Science. The program is also available on a part-time basis with completion of the program in two years.
The full-time program is ten months with entry only in the fall semester. Twenty full-time students and five part-time students are admitted to the program each fall. The student must have a high school diploma or equivalency and meet the criteria for admittance to a health program at TMCC.
To secure a place on the applicant list, the prospective students can submit a program application prior to completing the additional application packet requirements. The remainder of the requirements must be completed and submitted prior to the June 1 application deadline.
The program provides instruction in all facets of:
- infection control
- chairside procedures
- practice management
- radiography and
- clinical science
In addition to the academic classes the school has a fully equipped dental clinic which allows the student to have extensive practical experience.
Upon completion of the program the student will be qualified to take the Dental Assisting National Board to become a Certified Dental Assistant. Job opportunities continue to grow in dental assisting. According to the National Labor Board, the need for qualified dental assistants is expected to grow by nearly 15% in the next five years. After competing the dental assisting program at TMCC you will have the trust and respect of the dental community. This will enhance your ability to obtain employment and become a member of a dental health care team.
