Counseling Services

Personal Counseling

Counselors assist students in making decisions about school, careers, relationships and other personal issues that can interfere with normal day-to-day life. Regular contact with a counselor can often make life's transitions easier and more understandable. Our staff includes professionally trained and skilled counselors with whom you can discuss your concerns, questions and feelings in a comfortable and trusting environment. You may learn to make better decisions, change unwanted behaviors, improve personal skills and relationships, develop increased confidence and set future goals.

Career Counseling

Career counseling enables students to understand their values, interests and skills and to research a variety of career options. Counselors guide students in career exploration and help determine the best educational program for a chosen career. Career counseling includes the interpretation of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Strong Campbell Interest Inventory and the Choices Interest Profiler. For more information, visit the Career Center Web site.

Career and Educational Planning

Counselors can assist students in determining a major and creating an educational plan, which may include information on program or degree requirements, necessary pre-requisites, and review of ACCUPLACER scores, course selection and a suggested path of study. For more information, visit the Academic Advisement Web site.

Goal Clarification

College is a time in which personal, academic and career goals are shaped. Counselors can assist students in clarifying and setting goals and determining the steps needed to take in order to achieve their goals.

Transfer Planning

Counselors can assist students who wish to transfer to a university or college by providing information on admission requirements, transfer agreements, transcript evaluation, and lower division course preparation. The transfer process is complex and constantly changing, depending on the university or college in which you are interested in transferring. Transfer agreements have been created with UNR and UNLV and can be reviewed with a counselor for better understanding and to ensure you are taking the necessary classes to transfer to one of these universities. Counselors can help you obtain information if interested in transferring to other universities or colleges.

Community Referral

Counselors make appropriate referrals for those students who will be better helped by the other practitioners, specialists, departments and facilities, to solve their problems. Counselors can assist in connecting students to other professionals and resources both on and off campus.

The counseling center provides various workshops throughout the semester on topics such as college success, study skills, test anxiety, time management, stress management, communication, goal setting etc.
