How can I learn about careers?
There are a wide variety of careers out there – some of which you may have never even heard – and even more careers are being created today. Start by doing some basic research in the career center or online. Discover the educational requirements, necessary licensure, job growth outlooks, average salaries, and typical daily activities of a particular career field. Once you've found a couple of options that match your personal values, interests, and abilities, look for opportunities to interview and/or shadow someone in that field. Meet with an academic advisor or counselor about classes offered here at TMCC that can introduce you to a career field of interest. Speak with faculty and other students in that field of study. All of these strategies can help you make an informed and satisfying decision.
How can I tell how many additional credits I need to complete my degree?
Did you know that you can track your own academic progress by reviewing your Degree Audit Report (DAR)? This report lists all of the courses you must complete to earn your degree, the courses you have already completed, and which classes you may choose from to complete remaining requirements. You can access your DARs report through your MyTMCC Portal to review your current program of study or to explore other degree options available to you.
How do I find out about employment opportunities?
The career center at TMCC hosts both an on-campus and off-campus job board at studentjobs.tmcc.edu. We have a list of other employment databases available to help you find your future job, and maintain a bulletin board of available job opportunities in the career center.
How do I find out about internships opportunities?
For information about internship opportunities, please review the Internship Program Guide, contact your academic department, and schedule an appointment to meet with an internship advisor by calling academic advisement and career services at 775-673-7062. Internships are also posted on the off-campus employers student job board.
How do I make an appointment to meet with a counselor or advisor?
Since we do not offer drop-in advising, please call the academic advisement center at 775-673-7062 to schedule an appointment with an advisor. During registration periods, especially May through August, appointments fill quickly and advisors may be booked out at least three to four weeks.
Students that are new to TMCC must register online for and attend a New Student Advisement Workshop to fulfill the mandatory advisement requirement. Workshop dates and times become available two to three weeks prior to each new registration period.
How do I transfer credits from another college into TMCC?
Once you have completed your new student advisement workshop and are enrolled in classes at TMCC you will need to submit an official copy of your transcripts to Starting Point/Admissions along with a Degree Audit Report Request in order to have your transcripts officially evaluated. This is the only way to have an official transcript evaluation completed.
While you wait to receive your official evaluation, you may review the Transfer Articulation/Course Equivalence table to find out how your coursework from another institution transfers to TMCC. If you cannot find your previous courses in this table, you will need to wait for your official evaluation.
As an enrolled student, you may also make an appointment to meet with an academic advisor for an unofficial transcript evaluation.
How do I transfer my credits from TMCC to another college or university?
First, speak with someone at the college or university to which you are transferring to ensure that you follow their requirements. Then submit an official Transcript Request form to Starting Point/Admissions to have your TMCC transcripts sent to that school.
How should I choose a major?
Choosing a major can be one of the more daunting tasks of college. It is important to remember that choosing a major is not that same as choosing a career, and you are not deciding "the rest of your life." Choosing a major is one of many decisions that may lead to a satisfying career. Many students are undecided about their majors when they enter college - and many who are decided change their minds more than once before they graduate (an average of three times).
- Complete the career assessments offered in the career center to begin narrowing down your major.
- Identify your interests, skills and personal values
- Research and read about careers in which you think you may be interested
- Take EPY 101, education, career and personal development. By reading and writing about proven success strategies, students discover many new options for improving all aspects of their lives. Through lectures, classroom activities, group exercises, self-exploration, journal writings and presentations, students will be provided the opportunity to cultivate the skills, values and attitudes necessary to become confident, capable individuals academically, personally and professionally.

Why is it important to research a potential career?
Did you know that most people spend more time researching their vacations than their careers? Yet your career directly affects your long-term personal happiness and satisfaction. The more you know about yourself and the world of work, the better equipped you are to make an informed decision about what career path to follow. In order to determine whether a career might be a good fit for you, you need to know a little about yourself. This may sound obvious, but often we don't take the time to assess our own skills, interests, personality, or values. Career assessments can help you identify your interests, personality, values and skills. Occupational research can help you identify the working conditions, physical demands, skills and abilities, employment outlook and salary of an occupation you are considering.
