American Society of Landscape Architects Student Affiliate Chapter at Truckee Meadows Community College – AKA: ASLA @ TMCC

Legitimacy and Mission Statement

National ASLA recognizes student chapters at schools that have accredited programs offering first professional or second professional degree programs in landscape architecture. As a community college, TMCC cannot offer a fully accredited program at this time but an articulation (agreement) is in place that allows TMCC students who have completed their associate degree to matriculate to UNLV's four-year probationally accredited program with junior status to complete a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture.

The chapter at TMCC is recognized by ASLA as one of three student affiliate chapters in the country. The other two are Montana State University and Cuyamaca Community College (San Diego County, Calif.) These two colleges do not offer degrees in landscape architecture (their members generally pursue degrees in horticulture and/or environmental sciences). TMCC is the only ASLA student affiliate chapter in the country that offers a degree in landscape architecture.

The primary mission of the new chapter is:

  1. To create a bridge between the students at TMCC interested in the profession of landscape architecture and the professional community of Northern Nevada.
  2. Perform outreach to the local community through events and activities to educate TMCC students, high school students and the general public about how landscape architecture helps make the world a better place and how to get involved at various levels.
  3. Plan, design, propose and install collaborative landscape projects in Dandini Gardens or other appropriate sites on campus that bring students from different disciplines together in a 'service-learning' environment.
