English as a Second Language Community Program
Do you need training in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English? As an adult who speaks another language, you can take noncredit courses in English as a Second Language at TMCC. You will be placed in a class level according to your reading test score and oral interview at registration. You can take ESL courses throughout the day and evening and in various locations in our community.

There are six levels of ESL
- Low Beginning
- High Beginning
- Low Intermediate
- High Intermediate
- Advanced
- Multi-Lingual I
All classes work on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Beginning courses concentrate more on listening and speaking. Advanced classes emphasize additional reading and writing skills.
You will also learn about the American culture and traditions, survival skills-such as filling out job applications, making appointments and calling for emergency assistance-and English grammar and usage.
TMCC holds a number of ESL classes throughout the community. Some classes are held at the TMCC Meadowood Center, 5270 Neil Road, S220, Reno, on the second floor.
Required Steps to Get into the ESL Classes
- Attend an orientation on Monday or Wednesday evenings (7 p.m. in English or 8 p.m. in Spanish) or Friday's (11 a.m. in Spanish or 1 p.m. in English) in TMCC's Meadwood Center, room 120
- Make an appointment for an assessment
- Register for class
